Maybe I’m Crazy but I don’t Want to go Back to Normal! May 20, 2020
Over the past week, I’ve heard people make statements like, “I can’t wait to get through this” or “I can’t wait to get back to normal.”
As I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on the past 6-8 weeks, I’ve realized I don’t want to wish my time away and “get back to normal.”
Yes, people are struggling and there has been tragedy during this unprecedented time. But I’ve also seen many examples of beauty & humanity come from this. I’ve seen people helping others regardless of their beliefs. I’ve seen people rally together to support the heroes in our communities. I’ve seen neighbors helping and getting to know each other.
On the personal front, my family and I have had dinner together many nights throughout this pandemic. We have laughed together, played together, walked together, and helped others together. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed hearing my children laugh out loud. Most of all we have loved each other through this time and ultimately, it has brought us closer together as a family. When we turn off the news & politics and focus on loving those in our circles, it’s amazing how it makes us all feel.
“Getting back to normal” is not something I’m looking forward to doing. Ultimately, my goal is to have a new normal where I keep my eye on what’s important. I don’t want to be in the rat race. I want to be the husband and father that my wife & children think I am. So, I’ve committed myself to say no to the things that are not a priority. I’m not going to stay busy just to stay busy. I’m not going to try and be everything to everyone. I am going to focus on priorities.
I have a saying in life, “It’s just as important to know what you are not going to do, as knowing what you are going to do.” I am reset, I am refocused, and I am re-energized. I’m ready for my “new normal.”
Am I crazy or unrealistic to think this?
