Are You Tired? I am! But That’s Not Going to Stop Me.

We’re now at the halfway point of 2020 and it has been quite memorable for mostly the wrong reasons.

It has affected me physically, mentally, and spiritually. My mental health has been the biggest challenge. Whether it’s social media, media in general, or even the people around me, I’ve decided to not let the second half of this year just drift away because the first half was tough.

Coming back into the office on July 6th after a long Independence Day weekend, I’ve decided this is a time of renewal where I won’t live in fear anymore. I will take the necessary precautions but I refuse to give up and let it stop me from being all I can be. As the 2nd half of this season begins, I reflect upon what I learned from the Jordan mini-series on ESPN:

  1. Most people struggle to be in the Present – I WILL BE IN THE PRESENT!
  2. Most people live in fear because we project the past into the future – I WILL NOT LIVE IN FEAR!
  3. Gifted people never achieve their full potential because they think about what will happen if they fail – I WILL FOCUS ON WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN I SUCCEED!

Why worry about the past? Yes, we need to learn from it but then we need to put it where it belongs – In the past.

Why worry about the future? Yes, we need to plan for the future but we need to put it where it belongs – In the future

Focus on the Present – At home, at work, with your family, with your neighbor(s), with stranger(s), with everyone.

Be here now – motivational handwriting on a napkin with a cup of coffee

The greatest basketball player ever, Michael Jordan has a number of quotes including the following:

About the past – “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

About the future – “Why would I think about a shot I haven’t taken yet?”

Michael Jordan didn’t allow what he couldn’t control to get inside of his head. This is my challenge as I move into the 2nd half of 2020.  I’m learning from the first half and will plan for the second half but more importantly, I will live in the Present.
